How to use the EmaraTax portal for UAE tax compliance
What is EmaraTax?
EmaraTax is the online tax platform run by the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA). It replaces the older FTA portal and handles tax registration, return filing, payments, refunds, and account management in one place. Businesses use EmaraTax for Value Added Tax (VAT), corporate tax, and excise tax. Access is through eservices.tax.gov.ae.
This walkthrough covers what the EmaraTax portal does, how to set up your account, the dashboard layout, the tasks finance teams handle most often, and fixes for common login and one-time password (OTP) problems. It fits into the wider picture of FTA Compliance UAE obligations.
Who needs an EmaraTax account?
Almost every UAE business needs one. If you hold a Tax Registration Number (TRN), you log in to EmaraTax to file returns and pay tax. New businesses use it to register for VAT or corporate tax in the first place. Tax agents, legal representatives, and government entities also have account types on the platform.
Common reasons to log in
- File a quarterly or monthly VAT return.
- Register a new entity for corporate tax.
- Pay tax dues by GIBAN bank transfer or card.
- Submit a voluntary disclosure to fix a past return.
- Appoint an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) for e-invoicing.
- Apply for a VAT refund or tax residency certificate.
If you are unsure what a TRN is or whether you need one, read our guide on What is a TRN? before you start.
How to create an EmaraTax account
You can sign up two ways: with a UAE Pass digital identity, or with an email and password. UAE Pass is faster because it pulls your Emirates ID details automatically and skips most OTP steps.
Option 1: Sign up with UAE Pass
- Open the EmaraTax login page.
- Click Login with UAE Pass.
- Scan the QR code with the UAE Pass app, or enter your Emirates ID number.
- Approve the login request in the app.
- Complete your taxable person profile on first entry.
Option 2: Sign up with email
- Click Sign up on the login page.
- Enter your email, mobile number, and password.
- Verify your email through the link sent to your inbox.
- Verify your mobile by entering the OTP.
- Log in and create your taxable person record.
After login, the platform asks you to set up a taxable person. This is the legal entity that owns the tax obligations. One user account can manage several taxable persons, which suits accountants and group finance teams.
The EmaraTax dashboard explained
Once inside, the EmaraTax portal opens to a dashboard with a left-hand menu and tiles for each tax type. The layout is the same whether you log in by UAE Pass or email.
Main dashboard sections
| Section | What you do here |
|---|---|
| Taxable Person | Profile, trade license, contact details, and authorised signatory. |
| VAT | Register, file returns, edit details, submit refunds. |
| Corporate Tax | Register, file returns, make advance payments. |
| Excise Tax | Register, declare goods, file returns. |
| My Payments | Pay dues, view payment history, get GIBAN. |
| My Correspondence | Notices from the FTA and your replies. |
| Other Services | Voluntary disclosures, clarifications, certificates. |
Switching between taxable persons
If you manage several entities, use the dropdown at the top of the dashboard to switch. Each taxable person has its own tile set, returns, and payment history. Filings made under the wrong entity are a common cause of penalties, so check before you submit.
EmaraTax registration guide for VAT and corporate tax
The EmaraTax registration guide differs by tax type. The steps below cover the two most common cases.
VAT registration
You must register for VAT once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 in a rolling 12 month period. Voluntary registration is allowed from AED 187,500.
- From the dashboard, open the VAT tile and click Register.
- Enter business details: trade license, legal form, and activity codes.
- Add bank details for refunds, including IBAN.
- Upload trade license, Emirates ID of the signatory, and proof of turnover.
- Declare expected turnover and zero-rated or exempt supplies.
- Submit and wait for the TRN, usually within 20 business days.
Corporate tax registration
Corporate tax applies to most UAE businesses under Federal Decree-Law 47 of 2022. The rate is 0% up to AED 375,000 of taxable income and 9% above that. A 15% Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax (DMTT) applies to large multinationals with global revenue over EUR 750 million from January 2025.
For a step by step run-through, see our guide on Corporate tax registration. The EmaraTax steps in summary:
- Open the Corporate Tax tile and click Register.
- Confirm your taxable person profile.
- Add financial year start and end dates.
- Upload the trade license and signatory documents.
- Submit and receive the corporate tax registration number.
Filing returns and paying tax
This is the most frequent use of the EmaraTax portal. Returns are filed online and payments clear through the same dashboard.
VAT returns
VAT returns are due within 28 days of the end of the tax period, either monthly or quarterly. The form is called VAT 201. Our deeper guide on Filing VAT returns walks through every box. Inside EmaraTax:
- Open the VAT tile and click the open return.
- Enter standard rated sales by emirate.
- Enter zero rated, exempt, and reverse charge values.
- Enter recoverable input VAT.
- Review the net VAT due or refundable.
- Submit, then pay through My Payments.
Corporate tax returns
Corporate tax returns are due within 9 months of the financial year end. So a year ending December 31, 2024 has a filing deadline of September 30, 2025. The form sits under the Corporate Tax tile when the period closes.
Making payments
Payments use the GIBAN, a unique virtual IBAN tied to your taxable person. Options include:
- Bank transfer to the GIBAN from any UAE bank.
- Card payment through the e-Dirham gateway.
- Direct debit for recurring obligations.
Allow two to three working days for bank transfers to settle. Late settlement triggers penalties even if the return was filed on time.
Voluntary disclosures and corrections
If you find an error in a past return, EmaraTax has a voluntary disclosure form (VAT 211 for VAT). Submit it as soon as you spot the issue. The FTA usually applies lower penalties for self-reported corrections than for errors found during audit. The form sits under Other Services on the dashboard.
Appointing an ASP for e-invoicing
The UAE e-invoicing mandate uses a Peppol 5-corner Decentralized Continuous Transaction Control and Exchange (DCTCE) model with the PINT AE format. Every in-scope business must appoint an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) through EmaraTax before going live.
Key deadlines
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| Pilot | Q2 2026 |
| ASP appointment, large businesses (AED 50M+ revenue) | October 30, 2026 |
| Phase 1 mandatory go-live | January 1, 2027 |
| SMEs (under AED 50M) | July 1, 2027 |
| Government entities | October 1, 2027 |
Penalties for non-compliance fall under Cabinet Decision 106 of 2025 and range from AED 2,500 to AED 50,000 per violation. The legal framework sits in Federal Decree-Law 16 of 2024 and 17 of 2024, plus Ministerial Decisions 243 and 244 of 2025. The official accredited vendor list is on the UAE Ministry of Finance site and the dedicated e-invoicing portal.
How to appoint an ASP on EmaraTax
- Open the e-invoicing section once it appears on your dashboard.
- Search the Ministry of Finance's published ASP list.
- Select your provider and confirm the appointment.
- Share your TRN and Peppol participant ID with the ASP to complete onboarding.
Fixing common EmaraTax login problems
The EmaraTax login is straightforward when everything works, but a few issues come up often. Here are the fixes.
OTP not arriving
Check the mobile number on your profile. UAE numbers should be in the format 5XXXXXXXX without the country code. If the SIM has roaming issues, switch to email OTP. Spam folders catch the email OTP regularly, so check there before requesting a new one.
UAE Pass error or stuck QR code
Update the UAE Pass app to the latest version. Log out of UAE Pass and log back in. If your Emirates ID is expired, UAE Pass will block login until you renew the card and re-verify identity at a UAE Pass kiosk.
Forgotten password
Use Forgot Password on the login page. The reset link expires within 30 minutes. If you no longer have access to the registered email, you must submit a profile amendment request through a tax agent or by contacting the FTA helpline.
Account locked
Five wrong password attempts lock the account for 30 minutes. Wait, then reset the password rather than guessing again.
Wrong taxable person showing
If you log in and see a different entity, use the dropdown at the top of the dashboard. If the entity you need is missing, your user account is not linked to it. Ask the legal representative of that entity to add you under User Authorisation.
Tips for finance teams using EmaraTax
- Set calendar reminders 7 days before each filing deadline.
- Keep a record of every return reference number after submission.
- Download payment receipts as PDF from My Payments for audit files.
- Use the Correspondence section weekly to catch FTA notices early.
- Limit user access by role; not every accountant needs submission rights.
- Match VAT return figures to your accounting system before filing.

Questions, answered
How do I log in to the EmaraTax portal?
Go to eservices.tax.gov.ae and choose either UAE Pass or email login. With UAE Pass, scan the QR code in the app and approve the request. With email, enter your registered email and password, then confirm the OTP sent to your mobile or inbox. UAE Pass is faster because it skips most OTP steps.
Is EmaraTax the same as the old FTA portal?
No. EmaraTax replaced the older FTA e-services portal in 2022. All VAT, excise, and corporate tax services now sit on EmaraTax. Existing user accounts were migrated, but first-time users must verify their email and mobile, link Emirates ID details, and set up their taxable person profile before they can file or pay.
Why am I not receiving my EmaraTax OTP?
Check that your mobile number is registered in the correct format, usually 5XXXXXXXX for UAE numbers without the country code. Look in the spam folder for the email OTP. If neither works, log out and request a new OTP after 60 seconds. Persistent failures usually mean the mobile number on file is outdated and needs updating through profile amendment.
Can I manage multiple companies in one EmaraTax account?
Yes. One EmaraTax user account can hold several taxable persons. Use the dropdown at the top of the dashboard to switch between entities. Each taxable person has its own returns, payments, and TRN. This setup suits tax agents, accountants, and group finance teams managing several UAE entities under one login.
How do I pay tax through EmaraTax?
Open My Payments on the dashboard. You can pay by bank transfer to your GIBAN, by card through the e-Dirham gateway, or by direct debit. Bank transfers take two to three working days to settle, so file and pay early. Always download the payment receipt after settlement and keep it with your VAT or corporate tax records.
What do I do if my EmaraTax account is locked?
Five wrong password attempts lock the account for 30 minutes. Wait for the lockout to clear, then use Forgot Password to reset rather than guessing again. The reset link arrives by email and expires within 30 minutes. If you no longer have access to the registered email, contact the FTA helpline or use a registered tax agent to amend the profile.
How do I appoint an e-invoicing ASP on EmaraTax?
Once the e-invoicing section opens on your dashboard, search the Ministry of Finance's published ASP list, select your provider, and confirm the appointment. Share your TRN and Peppol participant ID with the ASP so they can complete onboarding. Large businesses with revenue above AED 50 million must complete this by October 30, 2026.
